Abstract
Clusters have always been regarded as the missing link between the pure gas phase compounds and the condensed state. The first attempt to shed light on to their properties was as early as a century ago leading subsequently to the development of colloid chemistry. In spite of this early work, the real progress was made through the advent of new experimental techniques and the development of new theoretical procedures1. Thus it has been possible in many cases to follow the development of solid state properties of clusters consisting of 2 to several 10,000 particles, covering the whole range between gas phase and condensed state2–5.
