Progress in the Development of Multivalent Oral Vaccines Based on Live Attenuated Salmonella

  • Chapter
Book cover Modern Vaccinology

Abstract

Vaccination has proved to be an extremely effective tool in the prevention of infectious diseases (Robbins, 1990). The successes of conventional vaccination programs in eradicating and controlling disease have encouraged research aimed at developing more defined, safer vaccines to replace existing vaccines and also to realistically find ways of controlling diseases for which up to now there has been no effective prophylaxis. Many research programs have been made possible by the molecular biology ‘revolution’ which has allowed the cloning and expression of immunogenic components from organisms that are not culturable in vitro and has facilitated the identification of genes that are defined targets for attenuation leading to new candidate live vaccines.
