Abstract
The Eomyidae were small rodents (except the Hemphillian species). The skull was fully sciuromorphous in all post-Chadronian species (Fig. 14.1) and not known for the Uintan and Duchesnean species. The infraorbital foramen was low on the rostrum with a small bony knob ventral to it for the attachment of the masseter superficialis as in sciurids. There was never a sagittal crest on the skull; there were either no markings at all, weakly formed lyrate parasagittal crests, or strongly developed, subparallel parasagittal crests (the latter present only in the Hemphillian Kansasimys; Wahlert, 1978). In one genus, Aulolithomys, there was a small postorbital process on the frontals (Wood, 1974). The bullae were ossified and moderately inflated.
