Abstract
Successful division of the corpus callosum (CC) in humans was initially described by Dandy in 1931. Nine years later, Van Wagenen and Herren (1940) reported the use of CC section in an attempt to control the spread of epileptic seizures. Van Wagenen may have operated on as many as 27 patients during less than a year (Williamson 1985). Details concerning preoperative evaluation and postoperative outcome in these patients are sparse, with most information being anecdotal. Van Wagenen, after a flurry of activity, apparently abandoned CC section, as the procedure no longer interested him. During the 1960s, Bogen and colleagues (Bogen et al. 1962, 1963, 1965, 1969, 1975) began to use CC section in medically refractory epileptic patients. Few details of outcome in terms of seizure control were provided, but the Bogen series generated considerable interest in the neuropsychological consequences of dividing the CC (Sperry 1968, 1970). Neurosurgical complications ultimately led Bogen to discontinue the procedure.
