Prospects for IPM of Citrus Thrips in California

Citrus thrips, Scirtothrips citri, is a major pest in California accounting for ≈41.5% of the pesticide applications to citrus for control of insects, mites, and snails in 1990. A brief history of citrus thrips management is reviewed. Citrus thrips is native to California and the probable native host prior to the introduction of citrus is laurel sumac, Rhus laurina (Nutt.). Fifty-three other host plants have been recorded. Citrus thrips remains an impediment to an evolving integrated pest management (IPM) program in the San Joaquin Valley. Increased adoption of this IPM program will require an improved understanding of thrips predators and registration of new selective pesticides for use on susceptible varieties.
