Applications for Broad Band Communications

  • Stephen B. Weinstein

Abstract

Are there any applications for broad band communication, at rates of tens of megabits per second and higher? There are good reasons to question the assumption that a large number of people will want anything more than those activities - let’s call them “applications” - that can run very well on existing lower rate communication networks or on existing broadcast systems. The concept of broad band communication implies a high degree of interactivity at high transmission rates, although it does not exclude broadcast and lower-rate interactive applications.
