Cortico-Hippocampal Interplay: Synopsis of a Theory

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 271))

Abstract

This paper represents a synopsis of a more detailed argument which was published in 1991 in monograph form (Miller 1991; see also Miller 1989). That monograph developed a theory of the interaction between hippocampus and neocortex, included a great deal of anatomical and behavioural detail, and focused on the electrophysiology of the hippocampal rhythmic slow activity, otherwise known as the theta rhythm. The present paper aims to avoid most of the detail, and rather to paint the overall concept with broad brush strokes, identifying the main premises of the argument, the main thrust of the conclusions, and the implications for further work.
