Abstract
A viable approach to the early detection and correction of network performance problems is to construct algorithms that translate streams of numeric readings of network monitors into meaningful symbols, and to provide an inference mechanism over the symbols that captures the knowledge of the best experts in the field. Current implementations of this sort of solution represent the requisite knowledge in a rule-based framework. Unfortunately, rule-based systems can suffer the problems of brittleness and knowledge acquisition bottleneck. In this paper we describe an alternative implementation in which knowledge is expressed in a fuzzy logic framework.
