Abstract

Endemic goiter occurs in different degrees throughout the mountain and hilly regions of Romania. In 1947 the Ministry of Health proposed a control program, and assigned responsibility for it to the Endocrinology Institute in Bucharest. This action recognized the concept that iodine deficiency causes not only goiter but also has adverse effects for the entire organism (1).
