Overview of School Performance Problems

Abstract

The second most frequent behavioral problem encountered by primary-health-care professionals is the child who presents with impaired learning or school achievement. It has been estimated that at least 20% of school-aged children have difficulty maintaining age-appropriate academic performance. When a young patient presents with school problems, the primary-care physician should consider difficulties in five potential areas: (1) intelligence, (2) academic achievement, (3) attention/concentration, (4) perceptual (visual—motor) function, and (5) behavioral. Two major contributors to poor academic achievement are learning disabilities (LDs) and mental retardation (MR).
