Abstract

The most common concerns in pediatrics and other primary-care specialties are not the same as they were 20 years ago. During the past several decades there has been increased emphasis on “total health care.” This societal concern has broadened the role of the primary-care physician, requiring increased involvement with psychological and developmental testing. There is a particular need to be knowledgeable about these evaluation tools because it is estimated that one out of ten children has some type of developmental handicap or a less severe learning problem. Following the enactment of PL 94–142 [Education for All Handicapped Children Act (1975)], about 5% of all school-aged children received special education services for learning disabilities (LDs) despite an estimated 11% to 13% prevalence of LD.
