Abstract
Worldwide, sexual intercourse between men and women is the most common mode of transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (World Health Organization, 1990). In the United States, heterosexuals represent the fastest growing group at risk for HIV infection, and women who are partners of HIV-infected or high risk individuals (especially injection drug users) represent the fastest growing group (Ellerbock et al., 1992). Twenty-nine percent of all cases of HIV in women were attributed to heterosexual transmission in 1986 compared to 34% in 1991. As the HIV epidemic continues to expand, a growing population is at risk because of an ongoing sexual relationship with an HIV-infected person.
