Abstract
In spite of the contradictory information forwarded by the mass-media, and in spite of the skepticism of the scientific community, a substantial research activity has been brought forward in this field in four years, since its starting in the Spring of 1989. Six international conferences and about 1000 papers witness the noticeable effort produced around the world, and particularly in Japan, the USA and in Italy.
