Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic disorder with an autoimmune background in which tissue damage is mediated by immune complexes. It is a multisystem disease with a very heterogeneous clinical profile. Classification criteria established by the American Rheumatism Association (Tan et al., 1982) provide a useful guide for the clinician.
