Abstract
As the reader who goes through books from cover to cover knows from the Foreword, the first Soviet-American Symposium on Upper Paleolithic-Paleo-Indian Adaptations was held at the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Archaeology (LOIA, now called the Institute of the History of Material Culture, RAN) in July 1989. This meeting, which was followed by extensive field visits to ongoing excavations at seminal Upper Paleolithic sites in European USSR (Amvrosievka, Kosoutsy, Kostenki, Sungir, and Iudinovo), clearly had political significance. By July 1989, geopolitical realities had become such that Soviet and American specialists who knew of each other’s research only from the literature, and often from very incomplete or outdated publications at that, finally could get together directly “to talk shop” and to see materials and sites firsthand. Although we think that this was both long overdue and very good, we believe that this gathering’s lasting significance lay elsewhere, however, and that this elsewhere is in the domain of global scholarship without concern for borders or geopolitics.
