Abstract
Three genes (ace-1, ace-2, and ace-3) encode acetylcholinesterases (AChEs) in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (review in Johnson, 1991). The three enzymes differ in their catalytic properties and are called AChE of class A, B and C respectively. Classes A and B AChEs are major components accounting for at least 95% of the total AChE activity. They are both expressed in the motor system and in particular at the cholinergic excitatory neuromuscular junctions since homozygous double null mutants ace-l-/ace-2- are uncoordinated and hypercontracted.
