This chapter presents a collection of snapshots intended to show that a challenging climate existed even 50 years ago in the resorcinol business, and that, if anything, the entrepreneurial ingenuity was being challenged even more in the 1980s and 1990s. Even the very limited information given below indicates that correctly estimating investment and operating cost in a manufacturing facility, estimating the capability of the competition, and estimating the size and growth of the market for resorcinol and its derivatives at a given time requires the best information, talent, and savvy. Misestimates are costly and can lead to the death of a venture or to missed opportunities.
