Abstract
Epidemiologic research on cancer in relation to electric and magnetic fields began with the 1979 publication of a case-control study by Wertheimer and Leeper1 of childhood cancers in Denver, Colorado, USA. This study showed moderately strong associations between all childhood cancers and a measure of exposure known as the “wiring configuration code,” an index based on the distance of homes from electric power distribution and transmission lines.
