Habilitation for Children with Autism: A Swedish Example

Abstract

Any treatment or habilitation programme for childhood autism relies upon an accurate diagnosis, which in itself often constitutes part of the treatment. The notion that diagnostic and treatment strategies are generally based on specific theories or at least in some essential way related to theoretical constructs is a common one. Few of us realize the extent to which treatment is often pragmatic and initially unrelated to theoretical frameworks. Autism provides a good example of how theory-generated diagnosis and treatments have failed the test of time, whereas non-theoretical pragmatic models have prevailed and have influenced the theories instead.
