Prevention of Recurrent Calcium-Oxalate Calculi Through Use of Hydrochlorothiazide Combined with Amiloride

Abstract

While numerous studies have shown that thiazides are effective in prevention of calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis, a number of unanswered questions remain regarding this therapy: 1) why does it work; 2) who will benefit the most; 3) what is the minimum dose; 4) how can side effects be minimized; and 5) how might various co-therapies augment its effects?
