Abstract

Optical spectra of different kinds are very important tools for the investigation of the reaction center. Steady state spectra are sensitive to excitonic interactions between the pigments whereas the electron transfer process is reflected by time dependent spectroscopy. Since the structure has been resolved for the RC’s of Rps.viridis /1/ and Rb.sphaeroides /2/ it has become possible to study models for the molecular interactions based on the structural information and to check the quality of the model by comparing calculated model spectra with experimental data. In this way approximations to the molecular states as well as to the inter-molecular interactions can be obtained which are essential for the understanding of the electron transfer mechanism.
