Abstract
We think it is important to place our current understanding of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in an historical context. Therefore, we will briefly outline the changes in the concept of traumatic disorders over the last 100 years, as well as the factors that have influenced those changes. Four dimensions of PTSD will be considered:
