Psychological Intervention and Infertility

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: The Springer Series on Stress and Coping ((SSSO))

Abstract

There is a long tradition of psychological intervention for individuals and couples with infertility. Some of this work has drawn upon a psychosomatic framework, suggesting that infertility stems from emotional conflicts, whereas the conceptualization of infertility as a life crisis has served as the basis for other applied work. This chapter will examine psychological interventions with infertility patients. Few empirical evaluations of psychological interventions with this patient population are available, and consequently this chapter will draw upon established theory and research from other clinical settings or populations as well as clinical observation.
