Abstract
In this chapter, I present an overview of current issues concerning research in child and adolescent psychiatry. First, I will review some issues as to why child psychiatry as a discipline has not had as much research as other academic specialties. Then I will discuss newer developments, such as the National Plan for Research on Child and Adolescent Mental Disorders and the Institute of Medicine Report on Research on Children and Adolescents with Mental, Behavioral, Developmental Disorders. Following this, I will review the importance of research for clinical practice, teaching, individual growth, and advancement in the field in general. Research training will also be discussed. Finally, I will present a brief description of an empirical model for the study of child and adolescent psychopathology that can be a template to guide future studies.
