Abstract

In 1879 the father of experimental psychology, Wilhelm Wundt (1832–1920), founded the first psychological laboratory of the world. This laboratory was established to investigate Erfahrungswissenschaften, the science of experience. Since the data of such a science were anschaulich, or phenomenal, the methodology of psychology was introspection, the process of engaging in and examining one’s own thought processes and sensory experiences. Such a methodology sought, in short, to understand consciousness and its component processes.
