Abstract
The term “transvestism” has been given different definitions by different authors. For example, Hyde (1982) says, “Transvestism refers to dressing as a member of the opposite gender,” while Strong and DeVault (1988) narrow the definition by stating, “Transvestites are men who wear women’s clothes or garments in order to become sexually aroused.” Our discussion will apply the broadest definition of transvestism—that is, any instance of men or women dressing in the clothing of the opposite sex-including as a subcategory those “true transvestites” who are sexually aroused by the practice.
