Abstract
In testing for speciation models, the analysis must be at the species level. The test, in order to be fully satisfactory, must have well preserved data, as well as documented lineages to fully span the geographical and temporal range. Such examples are rare. The steppe lemmings or sagebrush vole lineages of Lagurus (Arvicolidae, Rodentia) are thus of great evolutionary interest in this respect. These lineages are fossilized in large numbers and have a high frequency of occurrence across Eurasia (France to China) throughout the Pleistocene period.
