Abstract
Most obstructing neoplasms of the upper airway are squamous-cell carcinomas, primarily carcinomas of the larynx. Carcinomas of the tongue, tonsils, and trachea may also produce upper airway obstruction. Men are much more commonly affected by laryngeal carcinoma than women, in the ratio of 8:1, and it is well known that heavy smokers and alcoholics are more susceptible to upper airway neoplasms. Individuals with hoarseness lasting longer than 3 weeks, vocal cord paralysis, or a lump in the neck should be evaluated carefully for evidence of upper airway obstruction.
