Abstract
Intestinal obstruction can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the anus. The two major categories of obstruction are mechanical and neurogenic. In mechanical obstruction, intestinal contents are prevented from passing by occlusion of the lumen. The occlusion may be intraluminal obstruction from such causes as gallstone ileus, food bolus obstruction, and fecal impaction. Causes within the bowel wall include such conditions as congenital atresias, bowel neoplasms, and inflammatory strictures. External causes include strangulated hernias, obstruction due to adhesions or bands, volvulus, and intussusception.
