Abstract
Throughout this guide we have described a variety of techniques or strategies for treating troubled relationships. Our experience and research have repeatedly demonstrated their effectiveness. However, knowing what couples need to do is only a beginning for the therapist. How do you get couples to engage in the activities that you feel will lead to an enhanced relationship? How can you ensure that couples carry out homework assignments that will promote the maintenance of the communication techniques they are acquiring in the therapy? How do you deal with problem situations that occur during treatment and may threaten positive outcomes or hinder the couple’s progress?
