Abstract

Magnetooptical experiments are extremely important for the determination of the electronic (or lattice mode) structures of materials. For a number of these solids, the application of magnetooptical experiments is based on the use of the zone folding technique. This approach is well known for good metals where the free-electron dispersion relation (\( E\left( {\vec k} \right)\) = ħ2k2/2m*) is folded into a Brillouin zone appropriate to the crystal symmetry. The effect of the periodic potential is then treated in perturbation theory in the context of the zone-folded representation.
