Culture, Ecology, and Development

Redefining Planning Approaches

  • Chapter
Environment and Culture

Part of the book series: Human Behavior and Environment ((HUBE,volume 4))

Abstract

Mine is a practical concern. Planning for development involves designing policies intended to shape, or, at least, influence what man does to nature and to himself in the process of using nature. As a planner, through my daily practice, I, therefore, relate to cultural ecology, as defined by J. W. Bennett (1976): “This is the heart of cultural ecology: the way man-man relations modify man-nature relations in particular representative cases, and how the results affect the future of both” (p. 310).
