The First Experiment
In the fall of 1962, we invited women students from the University of Kentucky to help us in what they thought was a study designed to develop ways of estimating individual contributions to group tasks. When they arrived, they were seated in groups of about five or so in a small auditorium, facing a large one-way mirror. The view from their seats showed two chairs brought up to a table on which were a number of lettered cards and a microphone. Shortly after their arrival a curtain was drawn over the one-way mirror.
