Part of the Advanced Applications in Pattern Recognition book series (AAPR)

This chapter concerns the problem of how to partition an array of numbers s(r̂) into a group of subarrays, each of which has some common property, e.g., a regional likeness or homogeneity. Specifically, the chapter is concerned with the case where r̂ is two-dimensional so that s(r̂) becomes s(x, y). Also assume spatial sampling of s(x, y) over an i, j array yielding s(i, j).
