Genome Research — Implications for Science and Society
Bringing a meeting to a close is very difficult if one is not able to summarise it in a concise intellectually sound way. So I decided to address another issue. I often ask myself “are our genome studies driving the world’s societies to be much more overtly based on genetic manipulation and genetic selection?” Of course, all the organisms in existence today are the result of mutation, recombination and selection, because there would be no evolution without these processes, but our forefathers were blessed with not knowing about genetics. It is Darwin, Mendel, and the geneticists of this century who have revealed to us the origins and consequences of variation in organisms. Their hypotheses have induced much controversy. There has been the debate about Lysenkoism and we still have the debate over evolution versus creationism.
