Considerations about the “Constitution of the Ether”

  • Viktor Gutmann

When Josef Loschmidt provided his enormous contribution to the atomic concept by the assessment of the number of atoms contained in unit volume of a gas, he was well aware of the necessity of the presence of a continuous medium in order to provide for the existence of the atoms as well as for the interactions between them. At that time, the medium was known as “ether,” since the further development of Faraday’s field concept as the physical expression of the continuous relationships was still in its early stages.
