Abstract
The Open University’s ‘New Directions’ programme began in 1993, when the UK higher education funding system was encouraging expansion of student numbers. The University’s strategic plan was to expand student numbers from 140 000 to 250 000 by the turn of the century. The plan recognised the need for thematic changes, and for involving all staff in these.
