High Performance Teams and their Development

Trends towards the use of less hierarchical structures in organisations have been evident in the 1990s. Moss-Kanter (1984) has advocated empowerment, commercial organisations have de-layered in search of cost savings, and matrix, project and team based methods of organising staff have been examined. The increasingly competitive environment has put pressure on organisations to reduce the number of their employees, and to obtain the best performance from those that remain. This would-be maximisation of effectiveness has heightened interest in the mechanisms of group performance, and the means of achieving synergy with groups which will enhance the efforts of the individual members of the group, and also achieve more than the sum of their parts.
