What does all of this have to do with bioelectricity? The answer is just about everything. From these few basic principles, we can derive almost all of the electrical properties of cells. Let us start with resting potential. Everyone knows that the inside of the cell is about −100 mV with respect to the outside (some cells, for example certain oocytes, have potentials that are much less: −10 mV). Historically the first cells measured had potentials in the −60 to −100 mV range.
