Pathogenesis of Hypertension in Patients with Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Abstract

Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is very frequent among adult male population. Its prevalence is estimated to be 1% to 4% of middle-aged man (Cirignotta, D’Alessandro and Partinen, 1989; Lavie, 1983; Young et al., 1993). Higher mortality and vascular morbidity rates have been reported in SAS patients receiving no effective treatment (Partinen, Jamieson and Guilleminault, 1988). Among various vascular complications, hypertension is most frequently observed in SAS patients (Partinen et al., 1988; Shepard, 1985). However, it is still controversial whether SAS is an independent factor contributing to developing hypertension from obesity, alcohol and age, all of those are known to be risk factors for both hypertension and SAS.
