Some New Salient Features of Deep-Inelastic Scattering at Hera

Abstract

At HERA the lepton probes the structure of the nucleon with a spatial resolution \( \lambda \sim \bar hc/\sqrt {{Q^2}} \), where Q 2, minus the squared 4-momentum of the exchanged virtual photon, can reach 90000 GeV2, thus providing a probe transverse size as low as ~ 0.001 fm, i.e. 1000 times smaller than the size of the proton. At HERA x can be as low as 5 10−5 at Q 2 values ≤ 4 GeV2. The low x and high Q 2 regimes are new domains in which QCD can be tested.
