The purpose of this chapter is twofold: (1) to demonstrate the relations established in the previous chapter in constructions on an intermediate level which is higher than the sentence but not coextensive with the discourse, and (2) to relate the internal structure of these intermediate level units to the dominance/ancillary concerns which are posited in Chapter 1 (Sec. 2.2 and 2.3). In brief, we want both to establish internal relations in local spans of text and to relate them to broader context. The description and exemplification of paragraph types found in this chapter is supplemented by attention to interactional paragraphs (chiefly dialogue) in the following chapter.
