Abstract
Every year marks a hundred or thousand or million or billion year anniversary of some point in the history of the Earth, but as we humans mark time, we are fast approaching a turning point of sorts—a new millenium. It probably is a good thing to take stock at least every thousand years or so and ask ourselves, “Where have we come from? Where are we going? What have we learned as a species that will help insure our survival and well-being in the next century, millenium and beyond? Do we know enough to recognize problems and opportunities now that might seem obvious in retrospect? What role will the ocean have in our plans?”
