Rearing of Larval Solea Vulgaris (Quensel, 1806) in Lake Quarun, Egypt

Attempts to rear the larvae of the sole (Solea vulgaris) in artificial conditions started at the beginning of this century by Fabre-Domergue and Bietrix (1905). Danneving (1948) reared the sole, using oyster larvae, Artemia nauplii and natural plankton as food for different stages. Shelbourne (1964, 1968, 1975) described the rearing techniques which reliably supported survival beyond the larval stage. This demonstration of the feasibility of mass production of juveniles stimulated a considerable amount of work for commercial cultivation (Fluchter, 1965, 1972, 1974). Irvin (1973) stated the initial feeding of sole larvae. Fuchs (1978, 1982); Fonds (1979); Dendrinos et al., (1984) and Dendrinos (1986) examined the environmental factors related to the survival of sole eggs and larvae under natural conditions. Howell (1994) discussed the mortality rates of flatfish.
