Flow through Packed Beds

There are two quite different types of porous media:
  • Packed beds: These include rock piles, sand filters, soil in flower pots, cigarettes, and absorption columns. For good gas-liquid contacting, absorption columns are usually packed with specially shaped ceramic, plastic, or metal objects such as rings and saddles which have both a large surface area and high voidage; thus, they have a low resistance to flow.

  • Porous solids: These include both natural porous materials such as oil-bearing rock and pumice, and prepared structures such as fused alumina particles, polyurethane foam sponges, foam rubber mattresses, etc.
