Abstract
Imagine a cartesian chart created with Charticulator where there are no fields bound to the x- or y-axis and there is an absence of any sub-layout but where the glyphs are stacked either horizontally or vertically within the plot segment. How is Charticulator able to lay out the glyphs like this when there is nothing driving the layout? What Charticulator will be using in this scenario is a scaffold. A scaffold determines the stacking layout of the glyphs in the absence of fields bound to the axes and replaces any sub-layout that has been applied. It’s in this chapter that we are going to explore how Charticulator’s horizontal line and vertical line scaffolds provide an alternative approach to laying out the glyphs in your chart.
