Abstract
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) was created by Netscape Communications to secure web traffic with cryptography and PKI. It became so valuable and widely used that it was turned over to the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) to standardize and improve it. At this time it was renamed TLS Transport Layer Security). The old term (SSL) has been obsolete for two decades, but is still widely used (as in “SSL digital certificate”). TLS was originally just for web traffic, but now is widely used with many internet protocols, including email, file transfer, LDAP, etc.
