Abstract

In this book, various examples are tried out directly on the console. This is primarily because Java offers the interactive command line application JShell as a REPL since version 9. In this appendix, you will get to know JShell briefly.

Notes

  1. 1.

Nearly every (professional) developer has his IDE open almost all the time anyway, at least while working. Therefore he could use a main() method to do something similar, but with the advantage of direct syntax check and auto-complete.

  2. 2.

Exactly: Both apply only to the commands in the jshell, but not if you define methods or classes. Then you have to provide a semicolon and handle exceptions.
