Abstract
End-to-end web performance optimization (WPO) involves optimizing various systems, components, and layers involved in the web request processing pipeline through techniques, best practices, rules of thumb, and methodologies. This chapter surveys state-of-art research methods, tools, techniques, and performance characteristics of various aspects of end-to-end web performance optimization. It adopts a multidimensional approach to exploring web performance optimization from various angles, such as the project lifecycle, the request processing pipeline, performance governance, and key web components. This first-of-a-kind approach provides vital insights into the performance impact factors needed for comprehensive performance optimization.
