Abstract

A critical element of any community-building journey will be the identification of corresponding member groups, as I generally discussed in Chapters 1 and 2. In particular, those building a community will need to identify which members make up a particular group (e.g., employees, partners, or customers), what capabilities are needed for each member to achieve success in his or her role, and how the members mesh with new or existing business processes in the context of system behavior. To a degree, this relates to the access and permissions that will be granted to each member group. However, the focus in this chapter will primarily reside at a more foundational level: community user licensing. While the constitution of a communities license mix can be changed over time, an unplanned shift in a set of licenses will come at a cost. Fortunately, you can avoid such impacts by establishing a proper understanding of license types and how they apply to a community early on in the project lifecycle.
